Following a 16-month layoff, the Canadian national team roared to a 5-1 win over Bermuda in their first match of FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualifying and look to make it consecutive first round wins when they take on Cayman Islands at IMG Academy in Bradenton Sunday afternoon.
In all, 30 Concacaf nations are competing in this first round with six group winners advancing to a second round of head-to-head knockout matches.
In his return to Orlando, former Lion forward Cyle Larin scored a hat trick to pace the CanMNT and Toronto FC's Richie Laryea, who also once called Exploria Stadium home, and Theo Corbeanu both scored their first Canadian goals in the comprehensive victory.
“We said it was about being dominant and taking control, but we also knew there would be frustrating periods, that this team would take some time to find some rhythm, and I’m really proud of them, because it’s not easy,” Canada coach John Herdman said after the match. “These guys have been away for a long time and when they found their rhythm in those patches, it just shows what this team can do and also how exciting the talent is coming through.”
Cayman Island, coached by 31-year-old Englishman Ben Pugh, are looking to rebound from a 3-0 defeat to host Suriname in Paramaribo on Wednesday.
This is the first all-time meeting between Cayman Islands and Canada, which return to World Cup qualification on June 5 vs. Aruba.
